Residents will be able to experience what life in Victoria was like 200 years ago during “1824: A Victoria Origin Story,” a live reenactment hosted by the City of Victoria, Victoria College’s Museum of the Coastal Bend and the Victoria Living History Society.
“As part of our bicentennial celebration, we want to give residents opportunities to reflect on Victoria’s rich history,” said Discover Victoria Texas Director Joel Novosad. “Residents will be able to get a sense of our community’s longevity by seeing how different life was for the early settlers of the community we call home today.”
The Riverside Park Special Events Area (near Riverside Stadium) will be transformed into a colonial settlement during the event. The Museum of the Coastal Bend will host school field trips in the park Oct. 18, and the reenactment will open to the public 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Oct. 18 and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 19.
“By stepping into the shoes of historical figures, we can gain a better understanding of their experiences, motivations, and challenges,” said museum director Sue Prudhomme. “Historical reenactments offer a unique and immersive way to understand history. And they’re just downright fun!”
Visitors will be able to tour the settlement and view demonstrations of many different aspects of colonial life in Victoria, including preparation of food, crafting and militia drills.
Visitors can also look forward to the following scheduled activities during the reenactment:
- 7-9 p.m. Oct. 18: Candlelight tours
- 10-11 a.m. Oct. 19: Ceremony with flag-raising, musket salute and performance by Granaderos regimental band
- 6 p.m. Oct. 19: Closing ceremony with musket salute
