[ARCHIVED] City to host come-and-go information session on Victoria Community Center project

Victoria Community Center Expansion. May 3 election. Early voting starts April 22.

Victoria voters are invited to attend an information meeting on the proposed expansion and renovation of the Victoria Community Center and the upcoming Venue Tax election to help fund it.

The come-and-go session is planned for Monday, March 31, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Victoria Community Center.

Residents will be able to view renderings of the Community Center expansion and renovation, speak to City officials and ask questions about the project and the Venue Tax.

There will be a second information meeting held 1-3 p.m. April 14.

About the Venue Tax

The Victoria City Council is asking voters to consider implementing a 5 percent vehicle rental tax and a 2 percent hotel occupancy tax. These two elements will appear as a single proposition on the ballot. Neither will impact residential property taxes.

In accordance with the 2024 Community Center and Fairgrounds Master Plan, the proposed project includes expansion and renovation for a 3,000-fixed-seat covered arena with an option to increase to 4,500 for concert events. The reorganization of interior program spaces could also enable the current building to host several unique events simultaneously. The master plan also calls for updated lighting, sound, a kitchen, restrooms, air conditioning, and disability access to improve the patron experience.

The project would increase the Victoria Community Center’s capacity to host livestock shows, rodeos, concerts, recreational athletic events, and larger conventions, as well as local events such as church festivals, weddings, and quinceañeras.

Planning for the community center’s renovation and expansion has been ongoing since the 2010 Victoria Community Center Feasibility Study, which first recommended converting the existing arena into an expo hall and adding a new covered arena. Likewise, the 2010 document observes many of the same facility limitations identified by the recent master planning process.
