Three University of Houston-Victoria students were able to hone their professional skills and explore their career interests during the City of Victoria’s spring internship program in partnership with UHV.
On May 9, the interns gave presentations about what they learned to their supervisors, City of Victoria executive staff and UHV leadership.
Itzel Aguirre, who graduated from UHV this semester with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, interned with the Victoria Police Department’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit. During her internship, she learned about the crime scene investigation process from beginning to end, including gathering visual information at the scene, processing evidence, identifying fingerprints and filing reports. She was also able to participate in a police ride-along and visited an evidence processing facility in Corpus Christi.
Kelvin Asah, who is pursing a Master of Business Administration degree with a strategic major in business analytics, interned with the City of Victoria Economic Development department. During his internship, he took part in the City’s business retention and expansion program, analyzing market trends and developing strategies to support existing businesses. As part of this process, he worked closely with two fast food restaurants (Burger King and Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers) to better address their unique challenges.
Mallory Elkins, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English, interned with Communications & Public Affairs. During her internship, she learned about local government communications and took part in the process of developing and publishing written communications for the City, including interviewing subject matter experts, writing press releases, implementing feedback and posting on social media.
