The City of Victoria has purchased two street sweepers for a new in-house sweeping program that will allow streets to be swept more often for a lower price compared to the contractor service that the City used in the past.

The City Council approved a lease-to-purchase agreement for the two street sweepers Nov. 15, 2022. At that meeting, Public Works Director Ken Gill explained that the City could purchase and maintain two street sweepers and hire two employees to operate them for less than the cost of outsourcing the service.

What’s next

Public Works will begin next week by sweeping highways and collector streets, since the existing need for maintenance on these streets is greater compared to neighborhood streets.

The City will begin sweeping neighborhood streets in the fall.

How often will streets be swept?

After the initial sweeping finishes, the City will be able to sweep streets more quickly: Highways and collector streets will be swept once per month, and neighborhood streets will be swept every other month.

Instead of taking individual requests for street sweeping, Public Works will follow a set schedule to work efficiently and avoid delays.
